About
Therapy Index Local indexes the federal registry of licensed healthcare providers and publishes what it contains for 2,013,859 therapists, counselors, psychologists, physical therapists and occupational therapists across 17,106 places in the United States.
Most directories in this category are paid listings: a provider buys a profile, writes their own description, and appears in search results because of that. That model produces rich profiles in places where providers can afford to advertise, and nothing at all elsewhere. This site works the other way round — it starts from a complete public record, so a rural county gets exactly the same treatment as a metro area.
The trade-off is honest to state: our per-person detail is thinner than a paid directory's. We know a provider's licence type, credentials, registered address and how long they have held an NPI. We do not know their approach, their fees or their availability, and we do not invent any of it.
What we add on top of the raw data
- Counts and density by place. How many providers of each licence type are registered in a city, how that ranks within the state, and how it compares per resident.
- Plain-language licence explanations. The official definitions are written for billing systems. What most people actually want to know is the difference between an LCSW, an LPC and a psychologist, and we say it in a paragraph.
- Geographic context. Which ZIP codes providers cluster in, and who else of the same licence type practises nearby.
What this site does not do
This site is an index of public registration records. It does not provide medical or mental health advice, does not recommend or endorse any provider, and is not a referral service. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 in the United States to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
An NPI record shows that a provider registered with the federal system and gave a practice address. It does not show whether they are currently licensed in good standing, whether they are accepting new clients, what they charge, or which insurance they take. Verify a licence with the relevant state board before making an appointment.
We also do not rank or recommend providers. The lists on this site are ordered by licence type and then alphabetically, never by any judgement of quality — we have no basis for such a judgement and inventing one would be dishonest.
If you are listed here
Practice addresses are self-reported to CMS and are not always kept current. Some solo practitioners register a home address. If a listing is yours and you would like it removed, use the removal request form.
Removal is unconditional and takes effect on the next build: request removal here. We do not ask for a reason.
Independence
Therapy Index Local is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or operated by CMS, the NUCC, the US Census Bureau, any state licensing board, or any provider listed here.
