The question behind the waiting list

How many therapists
are there where
you live?

2,013,859 licensed therapy and rehabilitation providers hold an active federal registration in the United States. They are not spread evenly — some places have five times the providers per resident that others do.

This site counts them for every city and state, straight from the registry. Nobody pays to be listed, so a rural county is covered exactly as well as a metro area.

What "uneven" looks like

Every US town and city where the resident population is a fair yardstick for who is registered there, by mental health providers per 10,000 residents. Most sit near the median; the long tail on the right is small towns that happen to contain a clinic.

Three things it answers

Is my area well served?

Every city page opens with providers per 10,000 residents, plotted against every other place in the state. That is the closest public proxy for how hard it will be to get an appointment.

What kind are they?

LCSW, LPC, LMFT, PsyD, DPT — the licence alphabet decides what someone is trained to do and whether they can prescribe. Each page breaks the local mix down and explains it in plain terms.

Who is actually there?

The full list for the place, filterable by licence type and searchable by name, with the registered practice address and phone number for each.

The workforce is growing

Every registration carries the date it was issued, so the registry doubles as a record of when the profession grew. This is the mental health side — the shape says something about how long a wait you should expect a few years from now, which no directory of current listings can tell you.

New registrations per year. Mental health providers, nationally. Annual registrations in 2025 were 63% higher than in 2008. The final bar is faded because 2026 is still in progress. Starts at 2008 on purpose. The NPI system launched in 2006– 2007 and the whole profession registered at once, so those two years are an artefact of the rollout rather than a measure of anything. Including them would make the following year look like a collapse.

Who these professions are

77.9% of registered mental health providers are women — but the figure is not uniform. It runs from occupational therapy at one end to psychiatry at the other, and since psychiatrists are the ones who prescribe, that gradient has a practical edge for anyone who has a preference and also needs medication.

Share of registrations recorded as female; the line marks 50%. Gender is self-reported to CMS. We show it because "a female therapist" is one of the most common things people search for, and for some kinds of work it is a real need rather than a preference — but it is a filter on this site, never a ranking.

What the registry can and cannot tell you

It can tell you

  • How many licensed providers of each type are registered in a place
  • How that compares per resident with everywhere else in the state
  • Which ZIP codes they cluster in
  • Each provider's licence type, credentials and registered address

It cannot tell you

  • Whether anyone is accepting new clients
  • What they charge or which insurance they take
  • Whether a licence is currently in good standing — only a state board knows that
  • Anything about how a provider practises

The method, including where it is imperfect, is written out in full on how it works.
