Every provider on this site holds an active National Provider Identifier and has given a practice address in the United States. The counts below are computed from the full monthly release of that registry, not from providers paying to be listed — which means the coverage is the same everywhere, including places a paid directory would have no reason to cover.

What the registry does not contain: fees, insurance networks, whether someone is taking new clients, or how they practise. For that you have to contact the provider. What it does contain, and what no paid directory can tell you, is how many licensed providers of each type are actually registered in a given place.

By licence type

What the licence types mean

Physical Therapist

Physical therapists (PT, and DPT for the current doctoral entry degree) are licensed to evaluate and treat movement problems — after surgery or injury, or from an ongoing condition. Treatment is exercise, manual therapy and education rather than medication. Many states allow direct access, meaning you can be seen without a physician referral, though insurance may still require one.

Occupational Therapist

Occupational therapists (OT, OTR/L) work on the specific activities a person needs to do — dressing, writing, driving, returning to a job. Where a physical therapist typically targets the movement itself, an occupational therapist targets the task, including adapting the task or the environment.
