What this licence covers

Physical therapists (PT, and DPT for the current doctoral entry degree) are licensed to evaluate and treat movement problems — after surgery or injury, or from an ongoing condition. Treatment is exercise, manual therapy and education rather than medication. Many states allow direct access, meaning you can be seen without a physician referral, though insurance may still require one.

Muscles, joints and bones — the most common reason people are referred to physical therapy.

The formal definition

A licensed physical therapist, including but not limited to an individual who is a Board Certified Specialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy, who has demonstrated specialized knowledge and skill in human anatomy and physiology, movement science; pathology/pathophysiology, pain science, medical and surgical considerations, orthopaedic physical therapy theory and practice, and critical inquiry for evidence-based practice.

Many also hold another licence

different training route, same person

These are registrations where the same person also holds a licence of a genuinely different kind — not the same qualification recorded twice. It is worth knowing because it widens what someone can work with: a counsellor who is also a social worker brings a different second toolkit than one who is also a behaviour analyst.
