What a Board Certified Behavior Analyst does

BCBA stands for Board Certified Behavior Analyst. You will see the letters throughout the mental health listings, and the work behind them is not what most people picture when they think of therapy.

What it is

Applied behaviour analysis is a structured approach to teaching skills and changing behaviour, built on measurement. A BCBA assesses what a person can currently do, sets specific targets, designs a programme to reach them, and tracks data on every session to decide what to adjust.

In the United States it is used predominantly with autistic children, and also with people with other developmental disabilities. It is the service most often funded when an autism diagnosis triggers insurance coverage, which is why the field has grown quickly.

How the delivery model works

This is the part families most often do not realise in advance.

The BCBA usually does not deliver most of the hours. The typical structure is:

• A BCBA assesses, writes the programme, and supervises.
• RBTs (Registered Behavior Technicians) or similar paraprofessionals run the day-to-day sessions.
• The BCBA reviews data and adjusts, with a required amount of direct supervision.

Programmes are often intensive — ten to thirty or more hours a week is common — and mostly delivered by the technician.

Questions worth asking:

• “How many hours a week will the BCBA be directly involved?”
• “What is the turnover rate for technicians?” — high turnover is common in the field and continuity matters to a child.
• “How are goals chosen, and how are we involved in choosing them?”

Certification, not licensure — usually

BCBA is a certification from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, earned through a master’s degree, supervised fieldwork and an exam. Many but not all states additionally license behaviour analysts, so in some places it is a certification only.

It is not a substitute for therapy

This is worth being clear about, because families are sometimes referred to ABA when what they were looking for was something else.

ABA is skill-building and behaviour change. It is not talk therapy, it does not treat depression or anxiety through the usual therapeutic routes, and a BCBA is not a psychotherapist. An autistic teenager with anxiety may need both a BCBA and a therapist, and they are different appointments.

A live debate worth knowing about

You should know that applied behaviour analysis is contested, and you will encounter strong views quickly if you read around.

Supporters point to a substantial research base and to outcomes in communication and daily living skills. Critics — including many autistic adults writing from experience of having received it — raise concerns about intensity, about goals oriented toward appearing non-autistic rather than toward the person’s own wellbeing, and about compliance-based methods. Practice within the field has shifted in response, and providers vary considerably.

But you should know the debate exists before choosing, read both sides, and ask any prospective provider how they choose goals and how they respond when a child indicates they do not want to continue. The answers vary a great deal between providers, and that variation is the useful signal.
